Applications for the University Recommended Japan MEXT Scholarship (2026/2027) are open for international studentd.
The University of Tokyo (Todai), Japan’s highest-ranked university, offers several English-taught programs, mainly at the graduate level. Under the University Recommendation scheme, each Japanese university first conducts internal screening and then nominates successful candidates to MEXT. Applicants must first contact their chosen university or graduate school before applying.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must:
- Be international students with strong academic records
- Hold a GPA of at least 2.30 (current or previous degree) and maintain it during the program
- Meet English language proficiency requirements
- Be from a country with diplomatic relations with Japan
- Be born on or after April 2, 1990
- Apply in a field related to previous studies or a closely connected discipline
- Be physically and mentally fit for study in Japan
- Be able to arrive in Japan around the date set by the host university (usually within two weeks before or after semester start)
SCHOLARSHIP DURATION AND BENEFITS
- The MEXT Scholarship provides full financial support, including:
- Full exemption from enrollment and tuition fees
- Monthly stipend: ¥144,000 (Master’s) or ¥145,000 (Doctoral)
- Additional ¥2,000–¥3,000 monthly for designated regions
- Round-trip economy airfare arranged by MEXT based on assigned travel route
- Return airfare at the end of the program (if conditions are met)
- Coverage for full program duration starting October 2026
Duration of study:
- Master’s: October 2027 – September 2029 (2 years)
- Doctoral: October 2027 – September 2030 (3 years)
