The Frédéric Bastiat Fellowship is a one-year, competitive fellowship given to graduate students enrolled in master’s, Juris doctorate, and doctoral programmes in a range of subjects, including public policy, economics, law, and political science.
The Frédéric Bastiat Fellowship offers a comprehensive learning experience that prepares fellows for a successful academic or policy career, going beyond academic endeavours. You will take part in conferences, seminars, and workshops to broaden your professional network and improve your proficiency in research methods, communication, and presentation.
During a series of colloquia where they will interact with Mercatus scholars who work on policy analysis and policy-relevant academic research, fellows will explore how this framework is utilised for a variety of topics like:
- Entrepreneurship
- Technological Innovation
- Public Health
- Regulation
- Immigration
- Natural Disasters and Military Conflicts
- Federal and State Fiscal Policy
Fellows will become part of a network of scholars, students, and graduates of Mercatus who are involved in and undertake leading-edge research in modern political economics.
Eligibility
Graduate students are highly encouraged to apply if they are enrolled in a recognised programme, such as a master’s, doctorate, or Juris doctor programme. This covers, but is not restricted to MA, MPP, LLM, JD, or Ph.D. degree programmes.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to meet all of the following requirements:
- Students who will be enrolled in an authorised graduate program in the forthcoming academic year.
- Students who can promise to travel for four weekends in the forthcoming academic year in order to attend colloquia.
- Students must arrive on time and prepare for each colloquium session, having carefully read the assigned reading in advance.
- Students who are interested in the Mercatus approach to research and outreach in the current public policy debates.
Benefits
The overall reward of up to $5,000 consists of:
- A stipend providing them with the financial freedom to focus on their research
- All compulsory readings
- Travel and housing expenses to attend colloquia hosted by the Mercatus Center
The Bastiat fellows have access to additional funding sources, such as:
- Conference funding, fellows are provided with financial assistance to attend conferences and workshops where they can showcase their research, interact with colleagues, and remain up to date on the most recent advancements in their respective fields.
- Finance for research which enables them to pursue innovation and boosts research productivity and quality.
- Possibilities for Networking: The fellowship gives fellows lots of chances to connect with a wide variety of academics, researchers, and decision-makers. Their professional networks are widened and avenues for future collaborations are opened by this exposure to the larger area of economics.
