The Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST) program and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship aim to promote academic excellence in graduate programs at publicly supported universities in Ontario. The programs are sponsored by the Ontario government and partner institutions and the university provides one-third of the award value, the government covers the remaining two-thirds.
By submitting a single application, students will be considered for both the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) and the Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST) at Waterloo.
- OGS – This scholarship program pertains to both Canadian citizens/permanent residents and international students.
- The QEII-GSST is a scholarship program that is exclusively open to students enrolled in a research-based graduate program in any of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) disciplines.
- Only Canadian citizens/permanent residents are eligible for the QEII-GSST
ELIGIBILITY
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must have:
- a valid study permit under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) if they are international students.
- Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or protected persons under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act Canada are eligible to apply for the scholarship if they are domestic applicants.
BENEFITS
The scholarship duration and reward information are as follows:
- The OGS and QEII-GSST awards are valued at a maximum of $15,000 per year, which is paid as $5,000 per term for two or three terms.
- Waterloo University recognizes the exceptional academic accomplishments of its graduate students with the President’s Graduate Scholarship (PGS), which is awarded to students who receive an OGS or QEII-GSST. Successful OGS and QEII-GSST recipients will commence their scholarship during 2024-2025 and can start during spring 2024, fall 2024, or winter 2025.
- The scholarship is granted for up to one year but is not renewable; therefore, applicants must apply every year to be considered.
- Recipients can keep the scholarship for a minimum of two terms, receiving $10,000 in total, or a maximum of three terms, receiving $15,000 in total. However, accepting an OGS/QEII-GSST for only one term is not applicable.
HOW TO APPLY
If you apply to the University of British Columbia (UBC) by January 15, you will be automatically considered for the International Major Entrance Scholarship (IMES). Once you receive an offer of admission to UBC, you will be considered for this scholarship. Scholarship decisions are made between mid-March and the end of April every year.
- To be considered for admission, applicants must have obtained a first-class average (minimum of A-/80%) in both of the last two completed years of study (full-time equivalent).
- The eligibility averages are calculated using grades from the applicant’s most recent academic history up to August 31, 2023. These grades are considered regardless of the program or their relevance to the candidate’s current or proposed program.
It is important to note that Waterloo is required to follow these parameters as dictated by Ontario’s Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU).
