PhD Scholarship Description
There’s a 3-year PhD exchange on organic compounds (VOCs) in wastewater at the Ministry of Health, University of Copenhagen. Areas fo focus include organic synthesis, medicinal chemistry, or the exchange of volatile organic compounds in ecosystems.
This fellowship is part of the Center for Volatile Interactions (VOLT) and aims at focusing on understudied, volatile-producing and consuming organisms and environments, such as soil, cryptogams, freshwater, seawater, and glacial ice environments, as well as plant leaf and rhizosphere microbial communities. T
he approved candidate will join the Center for Volatile Interactions (VOLT). The Center is housed in Universitetsparken, Copenhagen, where there are laboratory facilities and state-of-the-art instrumentation for analyses of volatile compounds, molecular analyses of microbial community structure and activity, as well as climate chamber facilities for incubation studies.
Study Area: Volatile Organic Compound Exchange in Freshwater Ecosystems
Location: The program is to be held at the newly established center of excellence (Center for Volatile Interactions, VOLT) which was funded by the Danish National Research Foundation.
Scholarship Profile: This Ph.D. project encompasses experimental work in the laboratory and the field and includes rate measurements, experiments with stable isotope and molecular analyses to assess volatile production or consumption processes and to identify the microbial organisms involved. The program uses advanced analytical techniques, including PTR-TOF-MS and GC-MS, to provide a unique opportunity to access the complexity of freshwater ecosystems.
Benefits: A stimulating working condition in a dynamic, collaborative, and international research environment.
Qualifications: We are seeking an interested candidate with a master’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Microbiology, Earth Sciences, Chemistry, or related field.Experience in limnology, petroleum analysis, VOC analysis techniques, isotope labeling, aquatic microbial ecology, molecular biology, or metabolomics is preferred. English proficiency is a must.
