MSC SCHOLARSHIP IN NURSING AND HEALTHCARE “Balancing Patient Safety and Autonomy; Interrogating the Data Using a National Database.”

Applications are invited to undertake a full-time or part-time MSc by Research in the Department of Nursing and Healthcare, School of Health Sciences (SETU), the Care Collaboration are looking to recruit 4 MSc candidates under this competition subject to available funding. The 4 MSc projects will focus on the areas of patient safety and patient autonomy using a pre-existing database in collaboration with HIQA (Health Information and Quality Authority) the national regulatory authority. This information will be used to inform clinical practice across healthcare services. Working in collaboration with clinical partners, academic and external parties the research will explore and prioritize.
Value
- A stipend of €18,500 (Full-time) per annum,
- fees of € 4,500 per annum,
- research materials: €1,000 per annum,
- travel costs: €1,000 per annum.
Eligibility
- Be a registered nurse or midwife on the active Register of Nurses and Midwives held by Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland; or be eligible to be so registered.
- Applicants should hold or expect to attain Honours Degree (minimum 2:1) in nursing or midwifery.
- Previous research experience with an understanding of research processes and methods ; employed as a nurse/midwife in Ireland in one of the following services: Older Person Services; Acute and Community Services; Mental Health Services or Intellectual Disabilities Services would be an added bonus.
- Knowledge and experience of data analysis.
- Applicants whose first language is not English must submit evidence of competency in English, please see SETU’s English Language Requirements for details.
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) and analytical skills. Computer skills, Microsoft Office, Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint.
- The candidate must be highly motivated and self-directed with good time and project management.
- The candidate should be willing to travel for research purposes and be able to demonstrate competency in communicating with health professionals and service users.

Safeguarding and Risk Governance in Healthcare
Description
This research proposes to explore the topic of restrictive practice and investigates the nature, purpose and determinants that inform decisions to engage in restrictive practices. While balancing ethico-legal and human rights issues the study also examines models of clinical decision making. It is intended to use the data to develop and implement an educational tool to support best practice in the governance and surveillance of restrictive practices. Using a mixed methods research design, the study will examine the prevalence and rationale underpinning decisions to engage restrictive practices. This information will be used to inform clinical practice across health care services. Working in collaboration with clinical partners, academic and external parties the research will explore and prioritize key areas for practice, policy and legislation using quality improvement lens.
